What College/Scholarship Committees look for

College and scholarship committees tend to look for students who will:

a) Enhance the overall atmosphere of their school. A strong and diverse student body makes a school a better learning and living environment.

b) Enhance the statistics and rankings of the school. Average GPA, rank, SAT score, National Merit status, etc. go into determining the ranking and perceived value of a school. As a result, many schools seek out students who will lift their averages and thereby their rankings.

c) Likely be successful later on life. Successful students contribute to a school’s reputation. Also, successful students are more likely to become donating alumni.

d) Be a good fit for their school. The purpose of colleges is to help their students learn and achieve their goals. Since students are more likely to succeed if the particular school is a good fit for them, schools like to evaluate whether they are the right place for a particular student. Similarly, if students simply don’t share the same interests or work ethic as the school in general, they are more likely to drop out or transfer away from the school, thus harming the school.
